So the other day while going to the grocery store I noticed something. It was the first time that I saw the effects of something being wrong with the economy. Two words: expiration dates. All of the milk on the shelf expires with in 2 or 3 days. This means that people are not buying as much milk as before the supply has not adjusted for the demand.

I wonder how else I will see the world change in my day to day life due to this economy thing.

Today is Blog Action Day! I decided to write about how you can take something simple, like lunch and make it just a little bit greener.

Bring your lunch – take out food usually means plastic bags, forks, and containers. All of which, yes can be recycled, but you might not have the means to do so at that time. So why don’t you just eliminate the use of them from the beginning? Not to mention the gas you might use to go pick up the food.

Use a lunch box – find one that works best for you and will keep you food cold with an ice pack. It’s great because it is re-usable. You no longer will have to throw out a plastic or paper lunch bag again. Plus, if you find one that in insulated you won’t have to put your lunch in the fridge which would use more energy; all you would need is an ice pack.

Bring your drink in a re-usable container – then you won’t be throwing a can or bottle in the trash at the end of the day. I find water works well that way I can make some lemonade or tea if I need to.

Bring your own silverware – my favorite is my old girl scout set. It connects together so won’t loose one piece.

Plan ahead – all of this takes a little planning in the beginning, but it won’t take long for you to get used to packing a green lunch.

Update:
I’ve been listening to the concert all day at work. It’s been pretty good. But I haven’t been moved until now. Melissa Etheridge is talking about how America is a country that stands up for when things are unjust, stands up for when they want change, stands up with the President is an idiot . . . Now I sit here with tears in my eyes for being so lame. Maybe I should just quit my job and work to save the world and live in a tent. I feel like our generation isn’t doing anything. We need to start . . . TODAY!

The events of this week made me think about a Chris Rock routine. This is what he said:

You don’t need no gun control. You know what you need? We need some bullet control. Man, we need to control the bullets, that’s right. I think all bullets should cost $5,000. $5,000 for a bullet. You know why? ‘Cause if a bullet costs $5000 there’d be no more innocent bystanders. That’d be it. Every time someone gets shot, people will be like… ‘Shit, they put $50,000 worth of bullets in his ass.’ People would think before they killed somebody, if a bullet cost $5,000. ”Man, l would blow your fucking head off, if l could afford it.’ …’You better hope l can’t get no bullets on layaway.”

Just think about it . . . it could work.

I’m beginning to fear April. The recent happenings at Virgina Tech reminded me that a lot of bad things have happened in April. Columbine, Waco, Oklahoma City, ect. People tend to draw the connection to Hitler’s birthday, which is in April, but I just think it’s the weather. I think that the weather has a lot to do with it. If you are depressed all winter and then Spring comes along and everyone is all happy and lovey-dovey, you just can’t handle it and snap. I don’t know if there is any scientific proof to this, but that’s what I think.

The happenings at Virginia Tech deeply saddened me, angered me, and strangely motivated me. I am sad because this was something that didn’t have to happen, but also was unavoidable. There were a lot of warning signs that many staff members on campus had inklings that something wasn’t right with this kid. So theoretically people could have intervened. Also it was unavoidable because some people just aren’t going to respond to help and that also makes me sad. I am angered for the pure reason that the gunman had access to guns. If guns weren’t so widely available, the amount of deaths would have been dramatically different . . .plain and simple. It is this anger that has motivated me to work towards getting rid of guns. Whether that means donating to charities, voting for specific politicians, or becoming active in the community I will do it so that my future children won’t have to worry about what their friends have in their backpacks.

This tragedy has also made me think of Iraq. I know that we are in a day and age where we are surrounded by news of Iraq but I do have to say something, but I don’t want it to sound insensitive. Why does the nation stop for 32 college students, but nothing is said about the college-age soldiers who die in Iraq everyday? What makes the value of their lives different? The V-Tech students didn’t choose to die and I would argue that many of the soldiers in Iraq didn’t choose to die either. I think that not many soldiers thought that dying for their country would include dying in an unjust war.

April . . . a sad month for all of us.

I turn 25 in 25 days. Being the historical person I am I decided to look at the past 25 years that I have been alive. A lot has happened in those years. It has been a quarter of a century and you only turn that age once. So for the next 25 days I’ll be documenting 1982-2007. Seeing as 2007 hasn’t happened yet and will only be 19 days old when on my birthday I’m going to start with 2006 tomorrow. Stay tuned . . .
