Don't give up on teaching! I know how you feel--I finished grad school in the spring of 05 and I just got a job for this fall. Illinois is a tough place to be looking for a high school job, but they're out there, they really are.
I spent the last year working part time and teaching as an adjunct at a community college (6 hour course), and on Saturdays at Northwestern University's Center for Talent Development. If you can find little gigs like that it will help you meet people who can help you with the job search.
Good luck!
(I found your blog through Superjux, by the way.)
